CANADA SOUTHERN STATION (CASO)

ST. THOMAS, ON

The Canada Southern Station (CASO) is a historical train station in the Railway Capital of Canada, St. Thomas, ON. It was originally constructed between 1871 and 1873 to serve as both a passenger train station on the lower floor and the headquarters of the Canada Southern Railway Company upstairs. The ground floor is now used as a space for weddings and other large events and the Railway Hall of Fame exhibit is showcased on the second floor.

co‑elevate was involved in a multi-phase investigation and adaptive reuse of the two-storey, 25,000 sq. ft. train station. The existing structure used heavy timber construction and multi-wythe brick bearing walls that were restored to provide a durable structure.

The final result was a refreshed and updated multi-use event facility that can now host events like family gatherings, fundraisers, and weddings while remaining true to the original character of the building and area.
